Screenwriting and Women

In 2007 Diablo Cody added her name to the still-too-short list of female screenwriters with her hit film Juno. And, she won an Oscar to boot for Best Original Screenplay. It's always great to have a new female voice added to the mix.

Three years earlier in 2004 Sophia Coppola was one of only three women to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Director category for her film, Lost In Translation.  While she didn’t make history as the first woman to win an Oscar for directing, she did take home the award for Best Original Screenplay. Surprisingly, Coppola joins just a handful of women writers who have won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.  While a larger number of women have won or shared an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, the majority of Oscars have gone to male screenwriters. Women like Diablo and Sophia are making their voices heard.  Perhaps some of the resources below will help you do exactly the same.

Just For Fun

If you really want to get your creative juices flowing, there is the National Novel Writing in a Month contest which happens every November.  You write a novel of approximately 50,000 words in a month.  A friend of mine has actually participated and calls it “crazy but fun”.  In 2005 over 59,000 writers signed up, with 10,000 crossing the finish line November 30th. For 2006 the non-profit organization expected 75,000 participants.

Take a virtual tour of the museum and view some of the 5,000 pieces on display at: www.schleichredwing.org
